Intergovernmental 10th Regional Environmentally Sustainable Transport (EST) Forum in Asia 13-16 March, 2017 in Vientiane, Lao PDR
The 10th EST Forum attracted over 300 participants, from 24 member countries from Asia and beyond. The Forum’s main topic this year was the contribution of Rural Transport to the 2030 Agenda of Sustainable Development. The Vientiane International Mayors Forum has been held on March 15 as an integral part of the EST Forum.
The EST Forum is run annually since 2004 by the United Nations Centre for regional Development (UNCRD) and the Japanese Ministry of Environment. GIZ has been founding member and served in a Technical Expert function since then. GIZ has been partner at the Forum.
Besides serving as panelists and providing expert comments, GIZ held presentations on
-Urban Road Safety- Guidelines for Policy Makers in Developing Cities, by Manfred Breithaupt, Consultant to GIZ
-Green Freight and Logistics in the Context of SDGs (incl. a comprehensive background paper), by Friedel Sehlleier
The Addendum to the Kyoto Declaration for the Promotion of Environmentally Sustainable Transport (EST) Toward Realizing Resilient, Smart and Livable Cities in Asia has been signed by approximately 15 additional cities as an expression of their leadership and commitment to build sustainable cities by brining necessary changes in their transport sector.
The Forum closed with the adoption of the Vientiane Declaration on Sustainable Rural Transport towards achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Draft Chair s Summary of the 10 th EST Forum.
The next year s EST Forum will be held in Mongolia.
