Workshop on Co-Benefits of Climate Actions in Asia

The Institute of Global Environmental
Strategies (IGES) in collaboration with the Ministry of the
Environment, Japan (MoEJ) and the United States Environmental
Protection Agency (US EPA) organized the US-Japan Co-benefits
Workshop entitled “The Co-Benefits of Climate Actions in Asia.”
The event was held on Tuesday 22nd April, 2008 at
the United Nations Conference Center, Bangkok Thailand. Dr.
Thirayoot Limanond from GTZ-SUTP participated in this event that gathered approximately 30 participants from
various international organizations, research institutes, government offices,
and policy makers from Asia and North America, with a main goal to
bring researchers and policymakers together to examine obstacles to
and opportunities for enhancing the policy impacts of co-benefits in
Asia.
This event is broadly broken down into
3 sessions. Session 1 gave an overview of the co-benefit projects in
Asia, which explained the current status of projects on co-benefits
launched by the United States and Japan. Session 2 focused on the
co-benefits of transportation policies in Asia, where representatives
from researcher institutes, organizations and local governments
presented their projects in details, and discussed the chief
obstacles to and opportunities for integrating co-benefits into
transportation policies in Asia. The last section entitles
“Co-benefits in the Post-2012 Climate regime” discussed on how we
can better recognize and reward co-benefits in the post-2012 climate
regime. In summary, the workshop was filled up with very informative
presentations and dynamic discussion sessions.
