The Sustainable Urban Transport Project (SUTP) Asia is a partnership between the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ), the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), CITYNET and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP). It aims to help developing world cities achieve their sustainable transport goals, through the dissemination of information about international experience and targeted work within cities.

GTZ SUTP at Better Air Quality (BAQ) 2008, Thailand

The Better Air Quality 2008 Workshop was held in Bangkok, Thailand during 12-14th November, 2008. As pre-events to this workshop GTZ SUTP conducted two training courses and one pre-event. The training courses were on “Mass Transit and Bus Rapid Transit Planning” and “Travel Demand Management” respectively, while the pre-event was on “Climate and Transport”.

The Mass Transit and Bus Rapid Transit Planning training course was conducted in cooperation with WRI-EMBARQ and CAI-Asia and was held on 10th November 2008. The course attracted over 50 participants who were mostly government officials related to urban transport and provided a stage for discussion on various planning instruments for developing proper mass transit systems. The lead trainer of the course was Dr. Dario Hidalgo (EMBARQ), supported by Dr. Toni Lindau (CTS-Brazil) and Mr. Manfred Breithaupt (GTZ).

On the 11th November 2008, a training course on “Travel Demand Management” was held in cooperation with LTA Academy, Singapore and CAI-Asia. The lead trainers for this course were Dr. George Sun (LTA), Mr. Manfred Breithaupt (GTZ), Mr. Armin Wagner (GTZ) and Dr. Thirayoot Limanond (GTZ-SUTP). More than 40 planners, government officials, NGO representatives, academia attended the event.

Both the training courses mentioned above were co-funded from the Sustainable Urban Mobility in Asia (SUMA) Project which is funded by the Swedish government (SIDA). In both the above courses, pre-selected participants who were trained under the SUMA project from India, China and Indonesia contributed with presentations.

Further, GTZ in cooperation with UITP, Brussels and the TRL, London organised a pre-event titled “Climate and Transport” on the 11th November. The event set stage for discussing various issues related to the topic. The main speakers at the event were Mr. Armin Wagner (GTZ), Mr. Manfred Breithaupt (GTZ), Ms. Heather Allen (UITP), Mr. Holger Dalkmann (TRL), Mr. Lew Fulton (IEA), Dr. Lee Schipper (WRI-EMBARQ). The pre-event also held a panel discussion comprising of the aforementioned speakers and experts from various other organisations related to transport and climate change.

During the BAQ 2008, GTZ had a poster session titled “The Impact of Urban Transport on Climate Change”. Mr. Armin Wagner (GTZ) had a presentation on “Fuel taxation as an economic instrument to tackle climate change” and he presented and chaired a panel discussion session on Marketing Public Transport, in which also Ms. Heather Allen (UITP), Dr. Dario Hidalgo (EMBARQ), Prof. Shivanand Swamy (CEPT, Ahmedabad) were presenters to a very intellectual and eminent audience.
