The Cities for Mobility program announced the second issue of its e-Magazine. In this issue you will find a series of contributions on the different fields of mobility. The main focuses are the results of the Second World Congress of Cities for Mobility and recent developments on Bus Rapid Transit in African cities.

Pécs municipality to sell 49% of loss-making local public transport co.

The local council of Pecs (SW Hungary) plans to sell a 49pc stake in the city's public transportation company by October, deputy mayor Bertalan Toth said at a press conference on Monday.

The city wants to sell a 32pc stake in Pecs Transportation (PK) in exchange for a HUF 1bn capital raise to PK's current capital of HUF 2.1bn. If the buyer is able to operate the company profitably at the operating level even as the local council lowers subsidies, it will be allowed to purchase a further 17pc stake for HUF 562m and take over PK's management rights.

TRANSPOWER-workshop on Traffic Management in Skopje/FYROM

The next TRANSPOWER-workshop will be held in Skopje, capital of FYROM, on June 3-5, 2008. Focusing on Traffic Management, the event allows for knowledge-sharing on state-of-the-art solutions as well as for direct exchange on challenges in implementation of traffic management solutions. Further, case studies and good/bad practices from member cities will be presented and discussed in-depth. 

GTZ is member of the competence team of TRANSPOWER and focuses on public transport.

The workshop is the fourth meeting of the entire consortium after a kick-off meeting in Görlitz/Germany, a mid-term conference in Halandri/Greece and a workshop on non-motorised transport in Sibiu/Romania.

TRANSPOWER (financed by the European Union (FP6)) supervises the implementation of small, manageable and tailor-made projects and concepts. Facilitating the exchange of experience and personnel TRANSPOWER will enable participating institutions to build up relevant capacities. Pooling 16 partners from six member states and one aceeding countries representing small and medium-sized cities (up to 500,000 inhabitants), policy makers of municipalities and cities will be able to exchange know-how with science and business.

EU - Green paper on urban mobility released

"Towards a new culture for urban mobility” is the title of the European Commission's new Green Paper on urban transport. It was adopted on 25th September, 2007 and opens a debate on the key issues of urban mobility: free-flowing and greener towns and cities, smarter urban mobility and an urban transport which is accessible, safe and secure for all European citizens. CIVITAS Forum 2007 in Kaunas

The CIVITAS Forum 2007 will be hosted by the Lithuanian city of Kaunas on 3-5 October 2007.

The city of Kaunas has been elected to host the CIVITAS Forum 2007 from the 3 - 5 October. Kaunas has grown enormously in the past few years. Kaunas started many innovative programmes for city development quite a few years before their status as a full member of the EU in 2004. Over a relatively short period, Kaunas has changed from a closed economy to an open or free market economy and has had to adapt very quickly. One such area of progress that the city of Kaunas is particularly proud to be associated with, is that of innovation and improvement within the city’s transport system. Read more »
